Collegiate Relations and Design Leadership partner with design colleges and universities across the US to recruit world-class creative talent that can lead to creative careers at GM Design Center. General Motors Global Design Center offers wide-ranging programs that support recruiting, collegiate partner sponsored projects, outreach initiatives and employee training to keep pave with industry trends using modern technologies. Gilbert is a master at repurposing old buildings, so there’s hope for redeveloping the Ren Cen, which has more than five million square feet of space. The automaker spent a $1 billion to make the building easier to navigate (it wasn’t entirely successful) and open it up to the city. It removed the bunkers from the Ren Cen’s entrance and created the GM Wintergarden, a stunning, five-story atrium with a ground-level view of the Detroit River.

GM nearly abandoned the Ren Cen to cut costs as part of its 2009 bankruptcy reorganization plan. Then-GM CEO Fritz Henderson proposed moving the automaker’s headquarters out of the Ren Cen and into its sprawling technical center in suburban Warren. Ford, who once saw the Ren Cen as a catalyst that would return Detroit to the prosperity it enjoyed in the 1940s, sold it to an investor group at an apparent loss in 1982. But the Ren Cen was cut off from the downtown it was supposed to resuscitate.

General Motors Co. in Detroit announced today it will invest more than $71 million to establish a new 149,000-square-foot campus in Pasadena, Calif. The new facility will house the GM Advanced Design Center and will be closer to the automaker’s West Coast technology centers compared to its current North Hollywood location. The current North Hollywood Design Center at 5350 Biloxi Ave. — which marked its 20th anniversary last year — will continue to be utilized for advanced design operations as work on the new facility is completed through the second half of 2022. “These gates are closed all the time and we have 24-hour security on the site. Unless it’s a special event, normal business operations will not allow for the public to enter the building,” Wick said.

General Motors announced Tuesday an investment of more than $71 million to establish a new design and technology campus in Pasadena. So said GM project engineer Michael Wick during the city’s Economic Development and Technology Committee meeting Tuesday. The newly announced electric car, which executive chief engineer Doug Houlihan called "a game changer," is the latest installment of General Motors' plan to go completely carbon neutral by 2040.

Their areas of expertise include seat foam milling, pattern digitizing, automated textile cutting, embroidery, steering wheel wrapping and stitching, laser etching and engraving, soft trim seat pattern development, among others. We look for students that may have the interest, talent, and passion to explore creative careers in automotive design and sculpting. In this program, students work virtually with professional mentors, Creative Designers and Sculptors, who volunteer their time and talent. Mentors work with students teaching basic transportation design, sketching, color & material design, and optional clay sculpting. The program ends with a finale where students will present their final work to Design Executive Leadership.

Our digital sculptors are detail-oriented problem solvers who interpret designers’ sketches into 3D surface data using Alias. They aid in solving complex design and engineering issues with Alias models that match creative direction and meet engineering specs. Visualization Designers use photographic, video and computer-generated images to bring future vehicles to life before their public launches. Each image and/or video is tailored to the specific characteristics of the car, truck or crossover; and will be used for design reviews, social media, international public relations and global advertising. Our designers are highly creative individuals who have a passion for the world of trends, color and materials. Their role is to see the future – researching, designing and creating proposals that demonstrate innovative color, materials, décor, and texture ideas from concept to implementation for automotive application.

Our Design Center paint technicians specialize in producing show quality paint finishes and coating applications on all Design Center properties. The paint shop uses the latest custom materials and processes that are developed both in-house and by suppliers, on a variety of substrate materials. The finishes demonstrate design intent, during the development process, and highlight concept and show vehicles that will be on display to the public. Our clay sculptors bring designers’ sketches to life by interpreting them into finished 3D scale and full-size models.
The design of the new facility in Pasadena was chosen to create a more efficient layout, mitigate disruption, and increase efficiency of the various paint, metal, and plastic workshops. It will feature an innovation lab for designing implementing, and validating new design tools, and a user experience/user interface design studio. This announcement is part of GM Design’s global expansion plan, which includes the Design West facility, a 360,000-square-foot expansion being constructed at GM’s Technical Center in Warren. GM is relocating from its existing Advanced Design Center operations in North Hollywood to a nearly 149,000-square-foot campus at Rosemead Boulevard and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue. The automotive giant recently purchased The Sierra, an eight-acre, three-building complex at the site that was built in 1988. The new building will give employees tools and work spaces designed to foster ideas and collaboration, GM said.

In these events we share a creative career presentation, hold a sketch workshop and a color & trim workshop, and provide a sculpting demo. Ford enlisted as the project’s architect John Portman Jr., known for designing major downtown redevelopment projects, including Atlanta’s Peachtree Center. That’s because General Motors, which has owned five of its seven towers since 1996, is moving its global headquarters from the Ren Cen to Dan Gilbert’s soaring Hudson’s Detroit development downtown. The Ren Cen, already lacking tenants, will largely be vacant when GM leaves sometime next year. According to Axis, the city’s central business district has 232 million square feet of office space, but just over 4 million of that total is vacant, and another 334,000 is subleased space that is also available and less expensive.

Today, GM staff in the Design West building apply it to clay models to help designers see the reflection of light on the surface as it plays on the body of the car. The investment also signals GM’s long-term commitment to maintain a physical presence in one of North America’s largest hubs for multidisciplinary design and cutting-edge innovation. The new campus, which sits on 8 acres, will expand GM’s capacity to support emerging business opportunities in areas of advanced technology, software integration and future mobility solutions. Our Design Center Trim Technicians are a group of highly skilled craftsman that offer a variety of talents. Actual physical properties are provided for the Design studios to look at and review for concept and production vehicles.
When the logos went dark in November 2023, it sent social media into a frenzy with speculation that GM had abandoned the building. But as the Free Press reported, GM was replacing the lighting as part of routine maintenance at the time. Gilbert moved his mortgage operations downtown and has set about renovating buildings, adding residences and curating retail operations in the city core.
